I’ve held close one piece of media the last 36 hours, and that healthy serving of joy has kept me steady through my first experience with lasting physical dread. It’s a video made be we are mitú, who produce socially/politically conscious and often hilarious content. The video is set to Selena’s ‘Dreaming of You’ and features JLo’s Selena character serenading an image of Bernie Sanders in the sky, the same smiling photo of him I used on our Rave For Bernie campaign. I can’t post it here cause it’s a goddamn Facebook video but you get the idea.
This morning at 3 am the 101 freeway was shut down in LA because hundreds of protestors walked onto the highway yelling ‘Not my President’, I wasn’t with them. Perhaps I’m saving my energy, or maybe I had all the fucks I gave bled out of me in the primary and have come to believe that we actually deserve this guy. The right is still relevant because they can be easily herded, they get out and vote for a dude a lot of them say they didn’t like. The left on the other hand… we’re not easily herded – we think for ourselves, right? Isn’t that one of our defining characteristics as human beings? It is for me, to a fault this time.
Here comes the blame game, it’s hard not to play right now. I blame myself, even though I live in California which I feel gives me more of a luxury to vote independent, I should’ve fallen in line like the Republicans and gotten all my friends to do so. A lot of my friends even blame people like me who didn’t vote for the HRC, and lot of my other friends who worked their ass off for Bernie Sanders also didn’t vote for her either, but we all live in California so ultimately it doesn’t matter. That should be a cue to pivot on your anger for a moment and think of blaming something else sensible like our dumbass electoral college. Hillary won the popular vote like Gore in 2000 – after the horrors of the Bush years defined by a war everyone now agrees was a bad idea HOW THE FUCK DID WE LET THIS HAPPEN?
Full disclosure: I’m gonna get on my high horse here for a second and ride the fuck out of this thing on behalf of everyone who’s been in the streets for a political candidate or on the phones or doing whatever the fuck else people do in campaigns that are all a huge waste of money in a country where 1 in 6 citizens don’t know what their next meal is coming from. Why don’t politicians give some sandwiches away to hungry people and anyone wants to hear about your ideas can come serve or eat a free sandwich? Anyways, I didn’t need any money to help raise awareness about Bernie Sanders, other than using the campaign’s phone banking software, my friends and I did it all ourselves. IT WAS SO FUN! If you’re a progressive who cares about a candidate this abortion of an election proves you have get involved on that level, keyboard warrioring doesn’t count.
OK, I’ll get off my HH after this paragraph I swear. When I say we deserve Trump it’s because we’re only getting in the streets-level the passion after the fact. Everyone protesting in the streets last night – I get you’re pissed now, but I have to ask where were you guys during the primary and DNC? There’s an awful lot to protest in this country and we also have lives to attend to, but goddammit. I showed up to the Democratic National Convention with my dick out ready to rage day 3 when Obama came and all the protestors had gone home! The Bernie movement was beaten back, all those enthusiastic would-be-Dems left with their tails between their legs. How can we be mad at them? It’s not like it was a fair match and those of us all in on Bernie lost faith in the party after that. Thinking we’re going to fall in line and vote for a candidate effectively forced on us was an arrogant mistake. Protesting Trump is a big nothing, the electoral college needs to be abandoned but here’s info on how we can influence them now.
So once again I pivot on my anger to make sure it’s ends up directed in a way I can feel good about, Democratic party’s got to go like the electoral college has got to go. This election has effectively destroyed both parties and that’s an opportunity, which author Jacob McAfee has taken to relaunch the Party of Reason and Progress (PORP) – I’m very interested based on their logo alone. As a new party emerges, I’ll be working through existing political systems with Brand New Congress to run 400 candidates on the same platform from the same funding source. Basically with Brand New Congress, Bernie Sanders explodes into a million little Bernies and that’s how his legacy continues – read all about BNC and get involved here.
Welcome to the resistance.
We had a two party system. That system let the people down so badly that a reality TV star mopped the floor with BOTH parties while turning America against itself. Now it’s truly time that We the People take back our government.
We’re here to take back the country.
We’re recruiting and running 400+ candidates as a single, unified campaign for Congress in 2018. They will pass a radical and practical plan to get everyone good jobs, get incomes rising again and rid our government of corruption. Americans are hungry to rebuild their country together with everyone from every community, region, race and culture. Step 1 is electing a Brand New Congress in 2018.
YES! I can get behind this, I can avoid participating in a Donald Trump reality while working towards strengthening the resistance. However you decide to get involved moving forward, it doesn’t matter at all. It only matters that we 1. get involved 2. be respectful of each other’s views. We’re the human fucking race, we could be having the best time on this planet and I think we have to hold that light for each other. Did any of this make sense? I felt better trying to work it out on the Internet at least. Chin up, America – the price we’re paying the next 4 years ensures we never forget again that vigilance is the price of our freedom eternally and we must remain so. If you all were here, I’d give you a big hug right now.
