When OWSLA shared the first song from the Pope’s forthcoming album on their Soundcloud 2 weeks ago, I was stoked AF. This Pope is such a badass, and I love that he’s doing spiritual prog rock. Then I went to read news about the record and I came across tons of articles like this one from the Guardian aptly titled ‘Straight Outta The Vatican’. The prevailing narrative in the press about the Pope’s album is, “It does not show promise. A kind of Italian prog rock, it is bombastic, predictable and over-orchestrated.” It seemed like everything I clicked on said pretty much the same thing.
So I thought to myself, hey random staff writers of various major news outlets – why don’t y’all EAT A BAG OF DICKS?! Who are you exactly? Cause The Pope is the guy blowing the whole world’s mind. He’s the guy evolving the antiquated, prejudicial practices of the motherfucking Roman Catholic church, arguably the most powerful and corrupt organized religion on the planet. Sorry he’s not Phil fucking Collins. Sorry his music is “too predictable” and “over-orchestrated” for you, but you know what? Why don’t you let Phil Collins be Phil Collins and let the Pope be the most important figure possibly in all the Catholic church’s history who happened to make a prog rock album? You assholes are all going to hell.
