Soulwax aka 2manydjs have been releasing hour long audio-visual mixes the last few years in promise of it all leading towards a great 24-hour mix that would probably “change the world”. After 23 deeply sexual releases through their website/app/platform for all that is awesome, Radio Soulwax, the 24th hour of the mix is upon us.
It really is as good as everyone says, the Pitchforks of the world who never used to talk about dance music are nutting all over it like they’ve been on this shit since ’02. Personally I’m of the opinion that Volume 3 is/was/continues to be the most astounding of these mixes visually and musically. I am the girl under the covers and the vinyl machine (except w way smaller boobs) drinking their in their sounds and giving birth to the future.
Their original imagery haunts me way more than the animated remix art. But the remix art represents something awesome as well, and that is telling traditional notions of copyright law to “eat a dick”. As a licensed attorney and adamant destroyer of non-functioning, antiquated power structures, I am all fuckn for it. Any of the artists, labels or other copyright owners who may have their work reanimated in this video are faced with how amazing and innocent this “infringement” – it’s beautiful. I’m gonna cry.
Another thing about Soulwax is they reuse shit like crazy, these days every time I listen to a mix of theirs or see them live, I’ve heard half of what they’re playing 57 times before. The brothers Dewaele, who comprise 2manydjs and the heart of Soulwax, love to improve upon their existing work (just listen to Part Of The Weekend Never Dies, their ultimate remixed-but-played-live masterwork). And as fans, we get used to hearing their ‘Kids’ remix or that damned Peaches re-work again, but at the same time looking forward to hearing what they’ve done with it this time around.
As a self-proclaimed unsophisticated consumer, I appreciate the familiarity. I also appreciate the education I get about legacy-artists every time I watch/listen to one of these audio-visual mixes. Soulwax has lulled me into a blissed-out state of total complacency when it comes to consuming ANYTHING their brand releases, but they use their powers for good to make me a more well-rounded music fan.
Thank you for maintaining only the purest of intentions all these years, Soulwax, and for helping me become a “cooler” fan. I’m gonna be super uncool now and put on your MGMT remix for the 5000th time because it’s fucking timeless and sometimes when your favorite artist just blew their load into your eyes and ears you just wanna chill w somethin’ simple after.
