Y’all know how much I love hearing from each and every one of you about your dreams, in fact nothing is more inspiring. In the latest edition of Talk About Your Dreams, we’re talking to Sylvie Barnett of Distinguished Talent Agency. Her taste rests right on the cusp of the underground as it permeates the mainstream, she’s kicking open doors for more conscious artists who are populating the so-called ‘transformational festival’ market. We caught up with Sylvie after the DTA Space Yacht takeover in LA, I’ll let her take it from here.
What inspired you to want to get in the music industry?
I have always loved music and the arts. I grew up as a vocalist and originally wanted to perform on Broadway. Then when I was seventeen upon high school graduation I found what was the then underground rave scene and fell madly in love with it. As the scene has transformed, my affinity towards EDM has only grown stronger.
What was your experience leading up to starting DTA?
I have been working in the music industry for seven years and representing artists for over five years. I helped lead street teams for Hard and The Do LaB before going into artist management and then eventually booking. I was the administrative assistant at Coast II Coast Entertainment, and helped sign EOTO to their firm. I launched DTA upon graduating from my Master’s in Music Industry Administration at CSUN.
How did you start DTA?
I was already working with the majority of the artists at the Street Ritual Agency. DTA was launched as a sister agency to Street Ritual more geared towards the mainstream.
Have you ever considered other career choices?
Yes, I’ve considered working in film development producing movies. When I was a kid I also wanted to be a veterinarian until I realized that at least half of your job was putting animals to sleep.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself still representing artists as either an agent or manager, possibly more in the indie dance or rock scene. I also want to get involved in other projects including producing large-scale events and tours, film and other industries.
